Maggie's Dog Munchies - wholesome dog treat mix
Frequently Asked Questions . . .
I spend lots of time talking with dog lovers as you might imagine, especially when I am in a retail store that carries my products. Here are a few questions that are frequently asked
WHAT’S IN THE MIX?
I make my mixes with food grade products: high end herbs and spices and ONLY Bob’s Red Mill Flours. Oat flour, Barley flour, Brown Rice flour and rolled oats are the basis of my mixes. And its important what’s NOT in them: no wheat, corn, sugar or salt in any of the mixes.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE?
If you bake them the “quick way”(no rolling pin needed) by throwing all the ingredients into a mixer then roll it into a log with your hands, cut to appropriate size for your dog, flatten with your thumb-then we are talking maybe 10 minutes and 25 minutes for baking. You should have around 70-90 gourmet cookies—cookies you know are good for your dog,( you add wet ingredients, so you know exactly what’s in them) and FRESH!
WHY SHOULD I BAKE MY OWN DOG TREATS?
Two reasons:
You know exactly what is in them, remember the peanut butter scare and the melamine in the dog food, and
Economical! The cookie mix makes over 80 cookies and they are GOURMET cookies, the best you can give your dog.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Maggie, our wire-fox terrier, is 2 ½ years old. She has always been picky about her treats. I purchased custom baked treats from a nearby shop—which were quite expensive, $5 for a small handful. But she was worth it—until they closed. Then I realized I could do better, after all, some of the treats I brought home she didn’t like! (it turns out Maggie doesn’t like spelt flour-who knew??) So, I started playing around and adding and subtracting ingredients until I found what she liked. For example:
-I added ginger to two of the recipes because Maggie had a tendency to get sick when we traveled longer distances. That seemed to take care of that problem
-I added garlic to two of the recipes because that is a natural deterent to fleas
-I added parsley to one recipe because that is good for dog’s breath
-And I didn’t want any sugar or salt in my dog treats, since I am “generous” with Maggie’s treats. (maybe 5-6 a day)
IS THAT REALLY YOUR DOG ON THE LABEL?
Absolutely! And the plaid is the Duncan family plaid. We thought it would be fun to include, and its colorful too.
Thanks for trying Maggie's Dog Munchies.
